Travelogue

Who needs to closer an attractive woman, one should love all the side of Cesme in this way. Old Greek and Ottoman architecture and the salt of the Aegean sea, fresh fish, wind, herbs, vegetables and healing waters, gummy jam, ice cream, wine grapes and hot sun, natural beaches make you feel good. As a native of Izmir, I used to learn how the streets smell of the sea in my childhood.

The second half of the 1980s are the days when Cesme hosted the famous music festival. It was as impressive as Sanremo and as internationally interested as Eurovision. We would go for guests rather than contestants. Jackson 5, Albano Romino Power, Samantha Fox, Modern Talking, Kim Wilde and many other pop music giants performed great concerts in the historical castle of Çeşme. The streets, the beach was a real carnival; It was full of cheerful people dancing and singing.

Its golden beach was the most beautiful one, called Altinkum, because it was the most natural in the 80's and 90's. While snorkeling, there was a sea, even on the hottest day of summer, that freezes glass-like water as well as to your bone marrow. The sands on the beach where I bounced ricochet, were so thin so that my feet was burning and the natural sand dunes were similar as desert.

Don't ask why they call a town Cesme named fountain in where there are many historical fountains. Cesme is famous for its hot springs thanks to its underground healing waters as well as its abundant spring waters. I will never forget the cafe in the center where I went to Ilıca with my family in the 80s and 90s and stayed at the hostel and ate the delicious fountain dough and katmer for the first time in Ilica. I have to write about the pools in the sea that create a natural jacuzzi effect with boiling water. Lots of people would sit in the pool for hours. Ilica, at the same time, meant the beach that always comes to your waist no matter how you open in its turquoise sea, which has a long natural beach.

Alacatı is a lonely old Greek village with cobble-ups that we never knew about, and a place with traces of Turkish architecture. Happily, it has the most beautiful and rare sea wind in the world, which enables windsurfing 11 months a year. Try a few windsurf schools I know, such as the famous and experienced caglakubatwindsurf school, the world champion borakozanoglu windsurd school and an old one is Orsa surf school...

Highlights
  • Cesme Castle, which is the scene of the song competition, is surrounded by a ditch on 3 sides in the center and when you climb the walls, it fascinates you with a wide photographic view of Cesme. It is believed that the Genoese, who were good at sea trade, built this castle before, and then it was expanded with the 2nd Beyazid in the early 1500s. Its south side overlooks the Cesme marina, in front of the famous Captain Derya Cezayirli Hasan Pasha and his lion statue, and next to the castle is a inn built in 1528 by Kanuni Sultan Suleyman, called Kervansaray, but today it is a hotel providing accommodation, restaurants and shopping places.
  • When you find the statue of its captain Derya Hasan Pasha, remember the story I will give very briefly. According to some, he was of Caucasian origin but grew up in Algeria and then continued his life in Thrace, which elevated him to the Ottoman captain Derya. Çeşme was the subject of the 1768 Ottoman-Russian naval war, and it was a success thanks to Hasan Pasha's courage. He found the lion next to his statue in North Africa, domesticated it and roamed it with him.
  • The 500-year-old castle, no matter how solid it looks, during the Ottoman-Russian War in Cesme Bay on July 6, 1770 was damaged. That is why, in the archaeological museum inside the castle, you should see maps, medals, coins, swords from this war, underwater artifacts from the sinking galleys and cannons in front of the castle.
  • The place we know as Ildiri for years is actually Erythrai, the red city, with its 2300-year-old Athena temple and ancient theater. It means red in the Ionian language. The unearthed artifacts can be seen in the museum in Ceşme Castle. When I think of it, artichoke, fish restaurants and its serene bay come to mind. You can reach it by a path separated from Sifne. The distance from Cesme is around 22-25 km.
  • Today, there are many spas and thermal accommodation centers. According to my information, Cesme thermal water heats up in the magma layer and it is one of the most healing waters on the earth's surface that disinfects and assumed that it is good for rheumatic, skin, urine and skin diseases.

I couldn't get enough of the melon ice cream years ago at the historic Balkans bakery. Be sure to try the Cesme dove, whether they hunt and eat doves like that, an insatiable Turkish fastfood with floor-to-floor melting cheese. Katmer is the most beautiful local food in Cesme memory of my childhood. Seafood, olive oil vegetables, artichokes, herb dishes are everything unique to the Aegean.

Accommodation

Stone houses and mansions with Aegean architecture and village houses are the best choice for boutique accommodation in Cesme.
