Boating through Dalyan Delta

Being able to swim both in the sea, in the lake and in the thermal waters on the same day.

Travelogue

If you live in a popular beach resort like Fethiye, like me, how much I go sightseeing around, the trips doesn’t end. On the weekends, we leave home spontaneously to explore the environment and chart a route for ourselves on the way. This time we set our sights on Dalyan and Iztuzu beach. Using the opportunity to leave the house early in the morning, we parked our car by the river in Dalyan and started to look. Since there was a certain size standard that could enter the lake channel, everywhere was filled with small boats for 15-20 people. The advantage of these small boat is not a chaotic sailing as much as Fethiye boat tours for 200-250 people. We were already bored of doing this, so we looked for something different and fun. We learned that there are two types of boat tours departing from Dalyan. We missed it because the boats departing to Ekincik Bay departed at 10:00, but the tours called Dalyan Classic Tour started at 10:30. We immediately got on a co-operative boat, which is cute and clean and also completely renovated. Finally we started the tour by paying 300 TL per person.

While the captain of the boat and the crew were telling, he was giving a tour and serving on the other hand, and I felt exactly like this; We are so lucky that we are going with a giant team of two! First, they took us to the Kaunos Rock tombs and left us some time to talk about the history of the place and take photos. Then we sailed to the shores of Hole Island and swam with fish in ice-cold but crystal clear waters. We were given 45 minutes in this region. The reason why it is called Hole Island is that there is a huge stone in the middle of the island and a huge hole in the middle of it! How creative isn't it?

After that, we turned our route to the far end of Iztuzu beach. Time was given to swim for 1 hour and a delicious barbecue lunch was served on the way back. Next to the magnificent meals, they put 3.4 kinds of salads and appetizers. Even the smell of meat and chicken cooked on the barbecue made him hungry. I can say that the menu with options was quite rich. After our meals were over, the boat moved again and took us to the Alagol waters. We anchored in the waters of Alagol, on a warm side that mixes with the thermal water coming from the underground. There we immersed ourselves in the lake waters. Although the smell and temperature felt strange, it was a good experience, let's say we went out with the intention of healing. After 30 minutes of lake experience, we stopped in a very sweet area and said, let's come to the mud bath. We checked in to the facility by paying an extra fee of 50 TL per person. There were two types of pools and showers, there is also a restaurant inside, but since we came with a tour, time was limited and we immediately started to get muddy. First, you go into the mud pool and get muddy and dry in the sun. When your skin is stretched, you realize that the process is complete. Then you take a shower with pressurized water and drain the mud. Before entering the thermal pool, someone washes you for the last time, like a concentration camp, with a hose pressure. You are now ready to enter the warm waters. While I thought that I would really find peace after all this torture, I couldn't calculate the holiday crowd and the smell of sulfur. The pool smelled disgusting. I hardly lasted for 10 minutes in it, and it was for healing. Even though I took a shower with water flowing from the top again when I got out, I smelled of sulfur in vain. We didn't take anything with us except money and a phone, including a towel, because we couldn't afford to lose it in the mud and in the shower. We were dry until we got on the boat.

Our last stop was to sail to the waters of Köyceğiz lake, take a last canal tour, swim and eat watermelon. We rested well and sunbathed, swam, and finally we went back with a sweet tiredness but good memories.

They dropped us ashore at around 5.30pm and we had a really great day.

Dalyan boat tour
Departing from Dalyan Pier, after half an hour, we proceed like the natural Venetian canals winding to Dalyanagzi beach. Iztuzu Beach stretches over a wide area from the back to Köyceğiz Lake with canals, reeds and shallow shallows. Since the ancient port of Kaunos is formed by the filling of alluvium from the ancient port of Kaunos to Iztuzu, the boats in these natural wonder canals skid past each other in some places without colliding.
Our first destination is Kaunos, 3,000 years old with the famous king tombs; In the mythological story, it is said that it was founded by the son of Miletos, Kaunos, and the most striking of our attention are the rock tombs, which are carved into the rocks, which are easily seen from the canals, which are engineering wonders of the age. You can see the tombs closely with a 10-minute walk by going to a pier close to the Kaunos tombs.
Secondly, we swam in the turquoise waters of the aquarium, a little off the island known as Hole island.
The third place we stopped was Iztuzu beach. Imagine a 5 km long golden sandy beach where the Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs. One side is the salty Mediterranean, and the other is the freshwater Iztuzu lake of Dalyan. How many places in the world are there to enjoy swimming on both sides? Iztuzu is like a deserted paradise. Boats dock at Dalyanagzi, to the west of the beach. Since this is the breeding ground of Carettas, no one can enter between 20:00 and 08:00 at night.
Our next stop is a place known as Alagol, which has a healing side with thermal water boiling from the bottom, offering great pleasure for swimming.
Right after, we visit the most known mud healing bath of Dalyan and the world and we get covered in mud, we sunbathe for a good stretching of our skin, right after we wash with pressurized water and dive into the sulphurous thermal pool with a temperature of 40 degrees.
After touring around Köyceğiz lake for a while, it is now time to go back to Dalyan village.

Highlights

The ancient historian Plinius reported that eye ointment was produced with the salt extracted in Iztuzu and that it was very good for the skin.
Legend has it that the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra came to these mud baths for the sake of beauty.
While the city of Kaunos was an ancient port, it accumulated the alluvium brought by the Dalaman stream due to the change of its bed after an earthquake, forming the Iztuzu beach and the channels in the magnificent Dalyan Delta, which curves between the lake and the sea.
Hole island is so named because it is the place where a hole with a lantern on it, starting from the bottom of the lantern, extends to another end of the island.
At the back of the hole island, there is a pier where the daily excursion boats from Marmaris transfer passengers to Dalyan boats.
Dalyan Iztuzu Caretta Caretta is a breeding and protection area.
The Blue Crab is one of the most important other habitat creatures of the region. However, especially Blue Crabs have a status that needs to be protected due to their increasing tourism consumption habits. There are restaurants and tour boats that serve blue crab, and there are even inspection tours for those interested in natural habitats.

Tips and Tricks

We fell in love with Mr Tolga boat named Ela, one of the cooperative boats, in Dalyan village. When we were looking for a place to sleep, he showed us a place and even brought pillows, and became a brand with his hospitality.
For those who are curious, I leave his number Tolga ALACAIN: +90539 488 01 81
I leave the information that there is a half price application for meals for children here.
In addition, if you want to stay in the region, they have a cute hostel, you can reach them from the same number. You can reach them from their e-mail addresses; feridealacain@hotmail.com
If you are going to enter the healing mud and thermal pool, do not take anything valuable other than a towel with you, it may either get muddy or get wet in the water.
Healing mud entrance fee is 50 TL at 2022 season prices.
Since construction is prohibited on Iztuzu beach, you can only meet your needs such as toilets, showers and changing cabins.
You can find many of your needs such as hotels, pensions, restaurants, banks, ATMs in Dalyan village.
