Travelogue

Italy was the first country we wanted to go to after our honeymoon. We wanted it to be a journey by exploring that we did without planning, reservation. Where would we start? Although we looked at what is favorite, prominent Italy and made preliminary research, so that we visited places such as the Vatican, Pompeii, which we decided at once, and we did not regret it.
We once heard a story from a traveling friend; There is a Homeros epic, known Iliad tells about the Trojan war. In a legendary narrative, he told that a warrior from Troy, named Aeneas, escaped from the Spartans and settled around the capital of today's Lazio region, which was called Latium in history, after an adventurous journey and his descendance founded Rome. Rome was the capital of Italy, which was the center of interest and attraction for us. We started our tour from the capital of the Roman Empire, which connects Anatolia we came to with Italy.
We have already landed at Italy's largest airport, Rome Fiumicino. Thinking that we would go to the city center and many other places, we got a Roma Pass card from the Airport. You can look at the tips. We had allocated 3 days to ourselves for this city and then extended it to 5 days. You should spare 1 day to visit the Vatican with its museums, Sistine Chapel and its arts. We found the hotel we were looking for near Termini, the city's largest and main station, so we could easily reach everywhere. Everywhere in Rome is full of history and art. Architectural works, fountains, pools, sculptures are admirable. For example, do not return to the Fountain of Love - Fontana di Trevi - without stopping by and throwing money, the most popular fountain, which was built in 1762, with a statue of Neptune between the two Tritons in the middle. We threw the few coins we brought with us, wishing something. In fact, this is based on a fairy-tale belief; The one who threw a coin, came to Rome once again, fell in love with one in Rome, who threw 2 coins, and the one who threw three coins, married in Rome.
Colosseum is a must-see Roman landmark, the two-thousand-year-old arena and a Unesco World Heritage spot, where wild animals and powerful captives struggle to survive, like in the gladiator movie. It is the world's largest ancient theater and one of the 7 wonders of today. It is an interesting place where nearly 50 thousand spectators sit according to their class, and cages for wild animals are made on the ground. Near the Colosseum are the Arch of Constantine, the Roman Forum and the Palatine hill. If you want to see the symbols of the Roman Empire, you should visit them all together. At the exit of the Roman forum was the Capitoline museum. There is Palatine on the hill about 40 meters above the Roman Forum. This may be the place where the generation after Aeneas laid the foundations of Rome some 3,000 years ago. It is based on the mythical story of Romulus and Remus brothers, which they believe that a female wolf has adopted and raised on this hill. Romulus is believed to have founded Rome after he killed his brother Remus.
We caught an atmosphere we love very much at the Spanish Steps. Its name in the local language, Piazza di Spagna, is a baroque-style square and it was very fun to sit among the crowd on the stairs in the warm air, listen to the guitar playing and singers and eat the famous Roman ice cream.
There are many places such as squares, museums etc. that will ignite your love of history and art. We decided to visit the Vatican for a day. There are historical and artistic works for the enthusiasts as well as sacred for Christians and Catholics. St. Pietro Square and its church are like Michelangelo's Pieta sculpture made in the 15th century, the statue of Saint Peter believed to be sacred. The Raphael's Rooms, the project of which lasted for 16 years, had an interesting atmosphere with wall paintings that make you feel like a 3-dimensional view of high artistic value. We managed to take a few photos in the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo is said to have painted the ceiling frescoes alone for 7 years, although photography inside is prohibited.

What to eat in Rome? What to drink
It was the breakfast we had the most difficult time in Italy. They take care of breakfast with a few types of cookies and cappuccino. We shopped at supermarkets for tomatoes, peppers, olives and cheese that we are used to.
You should try tiramisu, which we love as much as it is unique to Italy. Although the price of a ball of famous Roman ice cream is high, it cannot be enjoyed with different cone options.
Spaghetti and pasta are separate things actually. It is known as cake in Italy. We ate a lot because it was made with love.
Italy is crowned with its greens, the primary feature of Mediterranean cuisine. They prefer to have wine in the evening. Do not go hungry during lunch hours, because restaurants are closed because of siesta (rest time).

Tips and Tricks

Transportation
It is a good idea to travel Rome by bike.
There are scooters and smart cars that make transportation easier in Rome. We preferred public transportation such as rail transportation and bus. According to our experience, renting a smart car or scooter for a few days to make a good city trip comes at a more advantageous price than public transportation.
We purchased the Roma Pass, which is used for 3-day public transportation at the airport. Coming to its advantages, we traveled by metro for free. Although there was a long queue, we entered the Colosseum without waiting in line and paying no fees. The museums are also free and we did not wait in line. We had the chance to get free map and discounts at some restaurants and cafes in the city. The Roma Pass is available in 2-day or 3-day options. Find out more.
Termini, which is close to the hotel we stayed, was the main station for those who will travel by train to other regions, cities and international.
