Travelogue
We can say that Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain, is the city of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi, whose teacher says he is not sure whether he graduated a genius or a fool, is the architect of the city's most famous buildings.
When you look at Gaudi's designs you see a great genius and creativity beyond its time. Patterns reminiscent of sea waves rise up and down with curves. Elegant details emphasizing the lines of the pillars resembling the roots of trees, branches or bones provide a feast for the eyes. Colors pop up with chirping mosaics. Especially when I looked at La Sagrada Familia, it gave me a feeling reminiscent of the structures in science fiction movies. When we got off at the metro stop, we mingled with the tourists flocking to Barcelona's most famous historical place, and when we lifted our heads among the crowd, we witnessed the enormous structure rising above us. This masterpiece of Gaudi, which dominates the city with all its majesty, is called the "Unfinished Church". Gaudi had this great church built without haste and died before he could finish it. And he said that my client is in no rush, referring to God.The saddest thing is that he died as a result of being hit by a tram while looking at his masterpiece.
A very pleasant surprise awaited us on our visit to Barcelona. Unknowingly, our holiday coincided with a festival time. La Merce festival brings the streets of Barcelona lively between 21-24 September every year. The history of the festival is as follows; When the city was invaded by locusts in 1687, they sought help from the Virgin of Grace (La Mare de Deu de la Merce). And then she was declared the patroness saint of the city. During the festival, entertainments and parades are held in the streets of the city. Giant wooden human and animal figures are danced around. Human towers called Castellers are being built in the squares.
In addition to so many places to visit and so many activities, the city also has a long beach. Getting rid of the tiredness of walking around the city on the beach makes Barcelona one of the most beautiful travel destinations.

Sangrada Familia :Its construction began in 1883. It is planned to be completed between 2026 and 2028. In the beginning, this big project was started with another architect. It was then handed over to Gaudi. The genius architect also constantly changed his plans. After the death of Gaudi, the completion date was extended and the construction was still not finished because the civil war intervened and the construction was damaged. Construction is proceeding with donations only. Two of the three fronts are open to visitors. It is always crowded. It’s a good idea to buy a skip-the-line ticket in advance to skip the long queue. To buy a ticket, here.
Park Güell: It is useful to spend half a day in this area, which has a large land, park and colorful buildings. Again, I recommend buying a skip-the-line ticket. In fact, the buildings that were designed to be residences were turned into a park because the construction was left unfinished. Admire the colours, shapes and styles of the buildings reminiscent of a fairytale land. For the entrance ticket, here.
La Rambla street: This main street, where you can find everything, is the center of the city with its lively activity. We found ourselves at the port as we proceeded along this street, where we discovered the best tastes and bought the most beautiful souvenirs.“Mercat de la Boqueria” is alo on this street. We had a lot of fun in this market, where we found huge mussels, various kinds of seafood, and great food.
Gothic Quarter: We admired either a window or a door at every step in this district that took us to the Middle Ages. This neighborhood, where the city's ruins from the Roman period are located, is a labyrinth with its narrow streets.
Kristof Kolomb Statue: This famous sculpture, which we come across as we head towards the port from La Rambla Street, was originally intended to show America when it was built. But the statue is pointing the wrong way. It is possible to go up by elevator from inside the statue.
Casa Mila: The building, which is also the work of Gaudi, is a masterpiece worth seeing with its wavy structure and natural appearance. It is also known as La Pedrera, which means quarry.
Casa Batllo: The building, which means a house with bones, is again a work of Gaudi. The building, whose thin columns in the windows resemble bones, is eye-catching with its blue-weighted colored glasses. Inspired by Monet's painting "The Water Lilies", Gaudi transformed the existing building into this eye-catching one by renovating and decorating it.
La Barceloneta: Isn't it great to be able to swim in such a beautiful and lively city? There is a walking path along the long beach and there are also small local food stalls
Nou Camp Stadium: Having hosted the Champions League final game twice, the Nou Camp Stadium is the focus of football fans. The stadium, which can be visited by tourists, also has a museum where the trophies won are exhibited
Picasso Museum: The museum, which Picasso personally participated in the opening, is a sightseeing point worth seeing with its historical building and Picasso's famous paintings inside. For more information, here. You can also get information about the historical development of the museum and who donated which paintings before you go to the website. From time to time, various exhibitions are held in the museum. You can coincide your trip with this time. Here is the link for opening hours and tickets.
