Travelogue

Cochem, the charming medieval town of Rhineland-Palatinate, is located in a curve of Moselle Valley. You will feel like a fairytale when you enter from the old gates, drink the different kinds of Riesling wines, pass through from the historical small Markt and explore the most famous symbol of it: The majestic Reichsburg Cochem, overlooking the whole town.

It is adorably small. So you can discover many things in just one day! That is why so many visitors come here only a day tour. But I definitely recommend to stay at least one night, to enjoy all the opportunities of the town offer.

The most beautiful place in the town is definitely the point before entering the castle, offering an impressive view of Moselle River and Cochem. Let me inform you, it will require a climb though, you need to walk up to the hill. But in the end, you won't be able to stop watching the view for a while. On your right, you will see Sehl, another town very close to Cochem. Therefore, if you don’t want to visit the castle, you shouldn’t skip that magnificent view.

And as we all know Europe has amazing cities & towns. Most of them look like to each other, but Cochem certainly has a beauty of its own. If you want to go back to history, the gate will always be open!

Tips and Tricks

Before Choosing Your Visiting Time

My favorite season is autumn, so I chose November. It was little cold but I was very glad to choose that month. Another reason I chose that I wanted to visit Burg Eltz, so I combined them together. As a photography fan, I wanted to castle without tourists. So I arrived there after the season was closed. Also I was really wondering Burg Eltz, Cochem & Moselle Valley at autumn with all those fall colors. You can not believe how majestic they were.

But of course these tips not for everyone, I can only recommend for people are seeking great shots and autumn lovers! For tourists and travelers, you don’t have to freeze, you just can enjoy the beauty of summer hikes and the wine festival in August! And do not forget to book early before arriving for the festival.

My trip was a short one, I spent 2 full days in Cochem. It was perfectly enough. If you are in a hurry, one full day may be sufficient if you plan according to what you are most interested in.

Places to Visit Around Cochem

  • There are some places that you can access via train or a short drive. One of them was also one of my dream destinations, Burg Eltz. It is just 30 min away via train. This is truly a must visit place. The fairytale medieval castle of Rhineland-Palatinate, nestled in the hills above the Moselle River, waiting for visitors. I preferred to go after the season was closed, there were so few people around so I managed to take the castle without the crowds.
  • Another place I can recommend is the Geierlay Bridge. It is the most beautiful suspension bridge of Germany, and it is offering an amazing view of full of greeneries in summer, fabulous autumn colors in fall. Whichever season you choose, I am sure you won’t regret your visit!
  • Also I stayed one night in Trier. Known as the oldest city of Germany, it is still preserving many historical traces from Rome. The market place is full of well preserved charming architecture. I definitely suggest you give a chance, even for a half day.

These are just a couple of places near by but there are many beautiful towns around Cochem, and they are waiting to be explored.

Additionaly, for summer months you can enjoy all the sceneries while hiking in the Moselle Valley.

5 Different Spots to Photograph Cochem Castle

1. From Skagerrak-Brücke

Surely this is the first spot that comes to everyone's mind. Check the weather and try your chance both at sunrise & sunset. The bridge has little shakes as the cars pass, so wait and press the shutter at the right time.

2. From Sehl

Walk to Sehl and you will get a different angle of Cochem Castle. If you want a clear shot without trees, you can stand on the section that looks like a small pier. So that way you can get close to the river.

3. From Above of the Town

If you don’t have a drone, you can still take an aerial shot! Follow the path into the forest near the castle, you will come across to “Drei Kreuze” - a small chapel named Three Crosses. Then go up until you see the road. Cross over the street and turn right, keep walking until you can see a small car park. From there you can take beautiful aerial shots of Cochem Castle and the river.

4. At one end of the Skagerrak Bridge

Although the middle one is very famous, there is a 2nd spot on the bridge. The point where you have the castle with the main road. I had founded the scene very moody with dried trees at that time.

5. On the Mosel River Cruise

There are lots of angles will be wait for you while you are touring on the river. My favorite is the one returning from the last point and before passing Sehl.
